Following news that Southern Water have been fined £90m for dumping sewage in rivers and coastal areas thousands of times between 2010-2015, the local Liberal Democrats in the Test Valley and in Southampton have launched a petition calling on the executives of Southern Water to clean up their act, or else hand back their bonuses.
Last year, it was reported that the Chief Executive of Southern Water received a bonus of £500,000, despite being regarded as one of the worst water companies in terms of pollution.
In just a short period of time, the Liberal Democrats’ petition is already closing in on 500 signatures.
Cllr Celia Dowden, leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Test Valley Borough Council said,
“When we are facing a climate crisis, there should be no rewards for polluting our planet. If the executives of Southern Water do not take serious action to clean up their act, then they must return their bonuses.
The Liberal Democrats’ petition is an opportunity for residents of Test Valley and Southampton to raise their voice and make clear to Southern Water that we will not accept such a careless attitude to our rivers and coastal areas. I urge as many people as possible to sign.”
