Thomas Gravatt - 'Whoever becomes Prime Minister needs to end the chaos'

Our country is once again being thrown into the theatre of a leadership election to replace a prime minister.

After Labour chooses their new leader, we will have had seven prime ministers in just ten years.

How is our country supposed to tackle the important long-term issues we face when we can't keep a prime minister in post for more than a couple of years?

A new prime minister means a cabinet reshuffle, new priorities, and a lot of upheaval.

Then in just a couple of years, we will have another general election and start the whole process again.

Meanwhile, the problems facing our community remain.

An NHS in crisis with no action to fix our social care system.

Water companies dumping sewage into beautiful rivers like the Test and Itchen.

And the cost of housing, fuel, and food continuing to soar.

There is so much that needs fixing, yet this work is repeatedly ignored in favour of another Westminster drama about who has the top job.

Labour criticised years of Conservative chaos, yet it now faces the very same Westminster instability.

Whoever wins the contest will be more focused on preparing for the next general election than tackling the big issues— and that's if they don’t get removed from office themselves.

This is why the Liberal Democrats are calling for systemic change in Westminster.

We need to change the political culture so that government can focus on solving problems rather than internal fights.

About the only benefit of our current first-past-the-post electoral system is that it supposedly provides strong government— I haven't seen any for a while.

Whoever becomes prime minister needs to end the chaos and focus on getting the country back on track.
